Bar Wotever Throughout August

This month we have witnessed the incredible Sadie Sinner The Songbird host Bar Wotever every Tuesday night at our home of The Royal Vauxhall Tavern. We have seen powerful performances from  FKA, Symoné, and Life by Veronica so far this month and extra special performances from some of Burlesques top stars including Jessabelle Thunder- Voted one of LA’s top 13 burlesque performers by Time Out Magazine, and Rubyyy Jones – who won in the Burlesque Hall Of Fame category she went up for,  ‘Most Innovative’ this year… and we saw exactly WHY she won!

We have even more fabulous acts taking to the stage including Travis Alabanza (where you can buy their newly released Chapbook – tonight only) and Lasana Shabazz! We have already witnessed a performance from one residential performer – Benjamin Butch, and  next week,  we will see performances from Ebony Rose Dark and our newest resident – Katy Jalili, PLUS an extra special performance from Many Monika!

Every Tuesday we are gifted with the presence of, and a few songs sung by, Sadie Sinner The Songbird and our DJ’s will keep the celebrations going until midnight! Come down for a social, a good laugh, and to feel empowered!

If you fancy taking to the stage and want an open mic spot at a later event, please email us – barwoteverinfo@gmail.com

…playing a poignant cover version of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.

This landed in our inbox recently.

Hey 🙂 I was at the RVT last night, it was my last night in London on this very emotional visit, used to live here. I was completely taken with the performances. Couldn’t help recording a bit of Miri doing Cyndi Lauper. This is what I wrote when I got home last night:

My London guide for May 2017:

Bar Wotever AudienceGo see Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf before it closes. This is acting.
Go see Elton John’s collection at Tate Modern. This is photography.
Sophie Calle at the Photographer’s Gallery is also photography, and much more, if you have ever lost a loved one. Go see that.
See Hockney at Tate Britain, they tell me, though if they try to sell you a ticket to enter 4 hours later then, like, fuck it.
Spend time with friends. See what they’re up to.
Go to the places you went to with friends who are now gone.
Try again the things you have quit.
Go somewhere that’s very green, then go somewhere that’s very grey.
Go to the Royal Vauxhall Tavern on a Tuesday. The people are different but it smells the same.
Listen to a Saudi-Lebanese 20 year-old Business student express his fears about the future of the world.
Unprompted, tell someone you have decided you prefer American hypocrisy over English passive-aggression, then worry that you’ve offended them.
Ride the tube, at rush hour, from Bank. Be like, there are too many people in this city.
MIRI at Bar WoteverListen to the sound of bus tires on puddles, again and again, filtered through your headphones playing a poignant cover version of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.

Diane Torr, Rest in Power

15826216_10154487232238393_4949428711507515547_nDiane Torr, leader of the pack has passed!

She passed peacefully with friends and family in Glasgow 31st May 2017

Diane Torr,  Drag King, Educator and Human Extraordinaire is gone. We will miss her and her contributions for a more gender variety accepting & understanding world. Her wicked sense of humour that sometimes was unbearably dark. Her Mischief, Creativity and Kindness.
She was a Trailblazer and we will remember her with a big smile and gratitude. You made the world better Diane!
Thank You!

Me and Diane Torr Glasgow, Sep 2016I knew her as a performer, and then someone who became my friend. She asked me to come with her to Stockholm and Sweden for two ‘Man For a Day’ workshops she lead there,  b/w photo at the top is from one of these, she wanted me to assist her with make up and knowledge for these workshops. She had expensive taste and seeing her going out and order food and drink with someone else’s money was a joy to behold!  And so was the tenderness and ease she guided and lead women to start taking up more space, walk with mor confidence and using their voices in a different way at these workshops. I know that these exercises lead by Diane changed many women’s lives.

I saw her the last time in September when I was in Glasgow and we met up, and she told me about her diagnose and her plans on what to do after it was sorted out..

I hope that by the end  she knew  how much she was Loved and Treasured within our community and world. She really was one of a kind!

I really hope that we are many who keep on carry her legacy of do whatever we want to do and by doing so, touching and helping many people along our way. Because Diane, you did. You were a trailblazer and a person I will miss A LOT! Gender Bending and Gender Blending Rule!

Rest in Power

The Bar Wotever Tour

As you are aware Bar Wotever set out on tour at the beginning of February and finished just last week on the 3rd March. We visited Bristol, Brighton, Exeter, and Edinburgh and in each city we did at least two nights of sold out shows!

Our first stop was at the Wardrobe Theatre in Bristol! We had incredible performances from our regular performers at Bar Wotever from Travis Alabanza, and Ebony Rose Dark, and we had three Bristol based performers take to the stage (Dis Charge, Isadora Vibes, Oliver Assetts, and Annette Curtain). We were also able to take along our stage manager Lysander and our sound techy Harry… Hooray!

Then we travelled to The MarlboroughBrighton. Where Adam All, Apple Derrieres, Sherika Sherard, and FKA took to the stage and wowed the audience at The Marlborough Pub and Theatre. This night was full to the brim of drag, live music, and love!

Next up was Exeter. After two performers and our stage manager missed their train from London… we all stayed as cool as cucumbers and waited for information that they were indeed on their way, in true “The Show Must Go On” style! Our new home away from home was at the Bike Shed Theatre, a very cute and warm space. Here we did one night of performance from Travis Alabanza, Billie Butch, and Benjamin Butch – with an appearance from Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry! Then, on the second evening we had a ‘Drag Performance Corner’ where Billie and Benjamin Butch performed in the bar area of the venue and Ingo DJ’ed the night away!

Our final stop of the tour was all the way in Edinburgh, where we teamed up with Dive Collective, to put on two evenings of fabulous shows. On both nights we witnessed drag, politics, comedy, and cabaret. All of which were performed at The Voodoo Rooms.

At every stop of the tour we witnessed some INCREDIBLE performances during the Open Mic slots that we offered… these were slots given to local performers who wanted/needed a place to showcase their work. These open mic performances showed us that there are so many performers out there who need their voices to be heard and to be listened to by a willing and loving audience. It was also so lovely to see our wonderful crew and performers pull together when we are away from our home at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern.

At the end of every show and at every city we visited on our tour, we had so many different audience members approach the crew and performers to thank us for bringing Bar Wotever to them. It was so heartwarming to see and feel the love that they felt towards us. This is why it is so incredibly important that we keep doing what we are doing, so we can reach out to more and more people around the country and then…the world! We have been asked back to Bristol, Brighton and Exeter…. Keep your eyes peeled for announcements of when will be on the move again!

We have ants in our pants!
