Wotever Sex: Fight for the Right of Great SEX!
RVT 23 August 2011
So, to the 5th and, sadly, last night of the Wotever Sex series. All the events during the season have been a wonderful mix of entertainment, friendly frivolity and sexual education (in a way they never taught you at school!). A jam-packed, occasionally packing, audience filled the RVT to join in the fun that was had. Regulars, irregulars, the Wotever crew and performers came together (!) to help make the series go out with a bang.
Sue Frumin‘s utterly individual, surrealist take on sex and ageing, sex and slugs and sing-a-long a musical saws got us off to an hilarious start. CN Lester then enchanted us with their music, bringing the romance, flowers and moonlight to queer sex. Their impassioned, beautiful voice bathed the audience in a velvety loveliness, their charm and witty repartee with the crowd left us with warm feelings in our hearts and loins. I, for one, eagerly anticipate their forthcoming album.
Queer Resistance and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence then informed us of the important, radical activism they do. It’s important to remember that the right to have great and safe sex comes through education, action and campaigning. Let’s face it, the heteronormative world won’t exactly encourage us to have more exciting, open and free sex than they could hope for; so it’s important for us to support groups like Queer Resistance and the Sisters, as they support our community.
Part two started with The Late Night Shop. These women have provided us with fantastic sketches throughout the Wotever Sex season. Smart, sexy, funny and unique their poularity has increased with every performance. We can only hope to be blessed with more from them in the future. Love their work, as do the rest of the crowd, and my blonde bombshell companion has a (perfectly understandable) crush on one of them. I’m sure she’s not the only one!

Next, Zorras blew the crowd away with their splendid mix of poetry, film, singing and music. Words of great insight and humour, fantastic stage presence, wonderfully bluesy vocals and percussion that had many a pulse racing and other parts throbbing, they rocked the house. Looking around the happy, smiling, enraptured faces of the crowd, overhearing the accolades, it’s clear that Zorras were a complete hit with both me and the rest of the audience.
As we know, the best sex ends with an almighty climax, so we were extremely lucky that the last performance provided that and more. Andra Simons, superbly accompanied by Felix on drums, gave us his stunningly powerful poetry, performed with intensity, passion and energy. Swept along by his personal, imaginative, wonderfully timed and phrased poetry, you felt your mind, body and soul enriched and uplifted. I love his work and never cease to be amazed by the way he can capture an audience. Stunning.
As ever, Joe Pop mixed the tunes into a cocktail of fabulousness with his distinctive retro twist; Ingo who curated the whole series, hosted with charm and aplomb, and all the Wotever crew worked their socks off to give us all another night of joy, love and community. The Wotever Sex season has graced the RVT with five nights of eclectic, sexy, entertainment. All power to them and to everyone who has come down to share! For those lucky enough to have attended in all five nights, diplomas will be handed out at next Tuesday’s Bar Wotever. A big thank you to all involved, it has been a blast!
